Resetting: Starting from scratch, full of optimism

Hi, I'm Bridget.

I'm currently the Sales Check columnist for Chicago magazine, but I'm looking for a permanent, full-time editing and/or writing position. The industry sucks, but I'm not giving up.

Eat Guilt-Free this Thanksgiving

For those of you who are watching your weight this holiday season, these tips from Women’s Health may help you out tomorrow.

  • Run or walk for 20 minutes in the morning.
  • Use a smaller plate during dinner, and fill half of it up with vegetables.
  • Eat some dark meat. “An ounce of dark turkey meat contains just eight more calories than an ounce of white meat, and the extra fat will help you feel fuller,” according to the WH editors. “Plus, only a third of the fat is saturated, and 86 percent of that has no impact on cholesterol, or raises HDL (good) cholesterol.”
  • Enjoy dessert.
  • Continue your typical work out and diet before and after the holiday.

ONE MORE THING:

The WH newsletter may not have mentioned this, but don’t skip breakfast. Doing so will only slow down your metabolism.

Christmas cheer comes early this year

As you’re aware, majority of my postings today were Christmas-affiliated. I apologize to all whom I’ve offended by not waiting until after Thanksgiving. I normally do not support the decorations and music until Black Friday, but I couldn’t help it this year! I blame my mom. ;-)

Outside the Goodman Theatre with my brothers, post-show
My mom couldn’t have picked a better show for us to enjoy as a family this holiday season. Like most of you, I’m sure, I’ve been exposed to many adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol over the years- via theatre, film, TV, etc. This, however, was the first time I’ve ever laughed and cried during the same performance. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for quality entertainment… as well as anyone with the “Bah Humbugs.”

Macy’s 2009 window theme - Believe: How A Letter Gets to Santa Claus
All and all, the windows were pretty strange this year. I think it had a lot to do with the department store’s excessive use of robots…

In addition to a typical tree, the Drake showcases what I can only describe as a delectable, multi-level icing village. I’m not sure if the thing is even edible (I’m leaning towards NO), but I desperately want to grab and devour a handful of that “snow.”
Don’t you?
